Working Together

At STA there are always lots of jobs to do. We work together to get the jobs done. We have a roster so that we all know what our job is. When we work together we achieve more.

This is our job roster. We change it every term.

Husna and Adam are responsible for collecting water. At the moment, the taps aren't working so we have to collect water to use to flush the toilet and clean the bathrooms. We also collect drinking water so that we don't get thirsty.

Salama is responsible for cleaning the chalkboard at the end of each lesson. She does her best to reach up high and clean the whole board but sometimes she has to use a chair.

Maimuna and Sabra are responsible for sweeping. They sweep the classroom every morning and every afternoon. The floor gets very sandy so it's a big job!

Salim is our flag bearer. He carries the flag to Assembly and helps raise it when we sing the Tanzanian national anthem.

Asha is the pencil sharpener. She makes sure all the pencils are sharpened in the morning and ready to be used.
Justis is our bell ringer. He uses a metal rod and bangs it against a metal bar to make a loud sound. When we hear the bell ring we know it's play time!

Ally handing out rulers to the Standard 2 and 3 students.
Ally and Salama are responsible for helping the teachers to hand out books and equipment. It's a big job. They have to remember where everything is and they usually start their work last.. They still manage to get their work done in time though so we think they do a pretty good job.

We keep our school and our classroom neat and tidy because we all work together to get the jobs done. We are looking forward to changing jobs next term.

Questions
Who is responsible for:
  • sharpening pencils?
  • sweeping the floor?
  • raising the flag?
Why is collecting water an important job?
Why are Salama and Ally usually the last ones to start their work?
Which job do you think takes the longest?
Do you have jobs in your school? How are they different to the jobs that we have? Which job do you do?

Make sure you post your answers below so we can read them.

  1. Hi Miss George

This is Miss Greenwoods class. We want to know if you are happy in Tanzania and enjoying teaching your kids. We appreciate you sharing this information with us. We have just read your blog and are going to answer some of your questions.

Jimmy thinks that it is important for you to keep collecting the water so you can flush your toilets and also keep drinking. Jimmy thinks he would be good at that job. Nur thinks that Salama and Ally are the last to start work because they need to hand out books and other equipment. We took a vote and we think that collecting water would take the longest to do.

At our school we also have jobs to do. We also have to put the Australian flag up every day and put out our school banners. We also have bike shed monitors who have to make sure people put their bikes in the bike shed. We have a junior school council and they organise fun things to do. We have recycling monitors who are incharge of collecting paper from every room and putting it in a special recycling bin.

We are excited because this Friday (22nd March) we are having a school fete. There will be fun activiteis to do like basketball shots, pie in the face and soft drink coin toss. It will be great. We are going to make sure that Miss Greenwood does not get a pie in the face.

We would like to know if you do P.E and Art? Miss George, Mohamed wants to know if you still look the same or have you changed your hair? Is there only one class in your whole school? Are you the only teacher? Where do you get your water from? We hope they don't have to carry their bucket very far. Is your school in the outback or in the city? We hope you can answer some of our questions.

    Thanks

    From Room 2

    1. Dear Room 2

I am very happy here and I really enjoy teaching my students. They are all wonderful. Mohamed, my hair is the same. The students all laughed when they heard that comment. They had tried to braid my hair already but I will not let them.

    2. Dear Room 2 and Miss Greenwood

Thank you for answering our questions. We think that getting the water takes the longest too but we haven't timed it yet. We get our water from the tank above the kitchen about 4 minutes walk away. The water is pumped up from a well. When it is working properly we can also get water from the town and it comes out the tap. There is a big construction at the moment so the town water has stopped for a while. Jimmy we think you would be good at carrying the water too.

Our school is in the outback on a shamba (farm). We live about 2 hours away from the biggest city in Tanzania, Dar es Salaam.

We do have sport and art at our school. Watch out for our next post about art. We haven't learnt pacman yet!

There is only one class in our school. There are 16 of us. Some of us are in Standard 1 (Prep), Standard 2(Grade 1) and Standard 3 (Grade 2). We all work in the same classroom but we have different groups for different activities. There are 4 teachers at the moment. 2 teachers, Teacher Leonard and Teacher Lauren (Miss George), are here all the time and then we have extra help on some days from Teacher Laura T and teacher Laura P.

We think your fete sounds like a lot of fun. Justis really liked the basketball shoot game and Athumani thought the soft drink coin toss sounded fun. We had a vote and 14 students and Teacher Lauren want a pie thrown in their face. We think it would taste delicious and you would be able to eat it for the rest of the day.

We would like to see what the Australian flag looks like. Teacher Lauren said she will show us.

We look forward to hearing from you again.
