One Hundred

We now have 100 likes on Facebook so this week we learnt about the number 100.


In groups we had to collect 100 things. We have been learning to count by 10s. So, we thought that the best way to count 100 things was to make ten groups of 10.

One group collected leaves. They went outside to get leaves from the trees. Then they made 10 groups with 10 leaves in each group. They counted by 10s to check they had 100 leaves.

Counting: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100!

Each group collected something different. We had to collect the items, check there were 100 and then show the class and count in front of everyone. The class then double checked we had exactly 100.

Now we know that there are 10 tens in a hundred.
We also remembered that there are 10 ones in a ten.

Handa's Surprise

We read a book called Handa's Surprise. We learnt about sequencing. Sequencing is when you put a story in the right order. We had sentence strips of the story and we jumbled them up. Then we put them back in order.






We learnt some new words like antelope and tangerine. We have been practising acting in our Performing Arts class. We used the story of Handa's Surprise to make puppet shows. In our groups, we coloured in the pictures for all the characters in the story.



Then we cut out the pictures. We found sticks outside and attached the pictures to the sticks to make our puppets.



We had to choose one person from our group to so the speaking during the show. The other two people moved the puppets.


We had to sit quietly while each group performed. We all loved the part where we got to say 'TANGERINES'. Cornelius said that part really well. It was really hard to remember the whole story and tell it to the class. Our teachers said we did a great job!

Meet Salama!

Hi

My name is Salama. I am in Standard One and I go to Steven Tito Academy. I am going to tell you about my day.

I get to school at 8:00. I take the bus to school with 12 other students.

In the morning we sing a song to greet everyone. Then we sing different songs like Hokey Pokey, The Rainbow Song or BINGO!

Before we go into the classroom we line up outside. The straightest and quietest line gets to go in first.


Every morning we read with our teacher. We choose a book from the bookboxes and the teacher helps us sound out the words. We take the book home to practise.

We also practise our spelling words. We have a spelling test every Friday. Last week, I passed the Golden words and now I am learning the Red words.

Here I am in class. It's 8:45. Everyone is listening to the teacher. We are reading a book called 'In the Tall, Tall Grass'. It has lots of rhyming words. We are learning about rhyming words.


Now, I am working with my group. We are practising the letters of the alphabet. I closed my eyes and chose a letter. I felt the letter and guessed which letter it was. Now my partner Maimuna is telling me if I was right.

After reading and writing it is time for break. We have break at 10:30. We drink porridge and then we have 20 minutes to play.


We start Maths at 11:00. This week we are learning about time. I am learning the word 'o'clock'. We all listen to our teacher and then we split up into small groups.

 After Maths it's time for Art. Sometimes we paint, sometimes we draw and sometimes we make things out of paper. Today we are painting flower pots. We will grow flowers in the pot.
 



At 1:30 it's time for lunch. We sit in a big banda to eat our lunch together. After we eat we have to wash our plates and stack them ready for tomorrow.

 After we have eaten and washed out plates we play until 2:30. Sometimes we play netball or football or we play on the swings. Today I am skipping.

 When it is home time, we sing the afternoon song and then walk to the bus.

 It can get pretty crowded on the bus but it is better than walking home in the hot sun. I had a great day today. I hope you enjoyed reading about it.
